The future of NFL analyst Tony Romo at CBS remains in flux following his arrest last month on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence, CBS Sports president David Berson said Tuesday.
"It's an evolving situation and we are still assessing," Berson said at the "NFL on CBS" media day. "There is no timetable or final decision at this time."
Romo received three citations from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office following a July 23 traffic stop after he was seen passing cars in a gore area, which separates interstate traffic from cars entering from an on-ramp.
He performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, booked and released. The sheriff's office said Romo had an open container of alcohol in his black Jeep. Court records show Romo was later cited for refusing "to take test for intoxication after arrest."
He was placed on leave by CBS a week later. He has a court appearance set for Sept. 21.
"We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand," Berson said. "That's very important to us. The focus should be and needs to be on our presentation and this great product and not on any others.
"Fortunately, we have a deep bench and everybody is stepping up."
CBS announced Tuesday that Ross Tucker will join Ian Eagle and Evan Washburn in its No. 2 NFL broadcast booth while analyst J.J. Watt moves up to the No. 1 crew with play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz in Romo's absence.
Romo, 46, has been the lead game analyst for CBS' NFL coverage since 2017 after making four Pro Bowl appearances during an NFL career that ran from 2004 to 2016 and was spent entirely with the Dallas Cowboys.
