NFL survivor power rankings: Why you should use 49ers, Eagles in Week 2

Welcome to 2026 ESPN NFL Survivor! The rules are simple: Pick one NFL team each week to win its game. If that team wins (or ties), you advance to the next week. If that team loses, you are out. Survive all 18 weeks and you can take home a share of the $25,000 grand prize. The catch is that each team can be chosen only once.

While the rules are simple, the game theory is not. Depending on the size of your group or what platform you play on, the optimal selections could change drastically. Smaller groups will likely end well before Week 18, so optimizing win probability each week is paramount. However, the larger the group, the more you need to focus on saving strong teams for later, as your season is more likely to last all 18 weeks.

ESPN's game requires just one team each week, so that will be the strategic focus of this column. Last week, the most-selected team on ESPN Survivor was the Los Angeles Chargers. Its upset loss to the Arizona Cardinals knocked out 21% of the field and served as the biggest Week 1 betting upset since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stunned the New Orleans Saints in 2018.

Outside of the Chargers, virtually all the other popular selections won, including this column's top choice, the Jacksonville Jaguars, who dominated the Cleveland Browns 34-10.

This week, seven teams are favored by at least 6.5 points, the most in any September week since 2021. Public opinion is consolidating among two teams: the San Francisco 49ers and the Buccaneers.

The 49ers are the biggest favorites, laying 13.5 at home against the Miami Dolphins. That is the largest point spread this early in the season since 2021.

For contests where you only need to select one team each week, I would suggest burning the 49ers now. The win equity offered by the 49ers is unmatched by other teams this week. Recently, we've seen smaller favorites struggle early in the year. Over the last five seasons, teams favored by 6 to 9.5 points have won just 60% of the time in September compared to 78% of the time in later months. Meanwhile, double-digit favorites are 11-1 in September in that span.

However, that doesn't mean there aren't other strong plays. The Buccaneers have their easiest game all season with limited future value. The Chargers project to be underselected compared to how large a favorite they are, and they are also running out of usable weeks. The Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens also make some sense as contrarian plays.

My estimated exposure for multiple contests is 50% 49ers, 25% Eagles, 20% Buccaneers, and 5% Chargers. Make sure to monitor the injury report for the Raiders and Chargers, as there are several key injuries on both sides that could affect that line, which could have me pivot to the Chiefs.

Note: Odds by DraftKings and subject to change. Future value based on Mike Clay's cheat sheet.

1. San Francisco 49ers (vs. Miami Dolphins)

This is the most lopsided matchup on paper all season according to ESPN Analytics, so it's hard to pass up on the "free square" in single-pick contests. The trickier decision will be handling the 49ers in bigger contests. On Splash Sports' flagship contests, saving the 49ers for Week 9 on a double-pick week against the Raiders is very valuable, though they have difficult matchups in Weeks 12-16. That said, they do not play on a holiday slate, adding to their appeal in Circa.

  • Chance to win: 92% (ESPN Analytics), 95% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: 49ers -13.5 (-950 moneyline)

  • Future value: 10th (60% average win probability)

  • ESPN Selection: 23%

2. Philadelphia Eagles (at Tennessee Titans)

The Eagles are coming in a little under the radar this week despite facing the team with the worst record in the NFL over the past three seasons. Yes, it's a road game, but the Eagles are 30-13 on the road under Nick Sirianni, the best record in the NFL. The Titans looked miserable in Week 1, getting outgained by 172 yards against the Jets, and now they face a much tougher opponent in the Eagles. This is the easiest Eagles game all season according to ESPN Analytics and second-easiest according to Mike Clay, so while they have future value, I don't feel obligated to save them like the Ravens. However, in the Circa contest, I would downgrade the Eagles significantly as they play on both holiday slates.

  • Chance to win: 69% (ESPN Analytics), 80% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: Eagles -7 (-310 moneyline)

  • Future value: Seventh (62% average win probability)

  • ESPN Selection: 12%

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (vs. Cleveland Browns)

The Buccaneers are the second-biggest favorites, and this is their largest favorite role all season on paper. For those who like to save the best teams for later, the Buccaneers are the easiest choice against the second-worst team in the NFL per ESPN Analytics. However, they are also shaping up to be very popular, which is scary for a team that has failed to cover a spread in 10 straight games dating back to last season. The Buccaneers will certainly be in my Survivor portfolio, but if selection keeps trending high, I plan to be slightly underweight.

  • Chance to win: 79% (ESPN Analytics), 82% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: Buccaneers -8.5 (-410 moneyline)

  • Future value: 19th (52% average win probability)

  • ESPN Selection: 27%

4. Los Angeles Chargers (vs. Las Vegas Raiders)

As disappointing as the Chargers were in Week 1, that loss arguably makes them a more appealing pick in Week 2, especially in more casual pools. ESPN Analytics downgraded them from 6th to 15th in its power rankings, meaning the Chargers do not have much future value. The Raiders looked good last week against the Dolphins, but this is a much more difficult spot against the Chargers off a loss. Historically, 0-1 teams that are similar-sized favorites against 1-0 team have been great outright bets. Just monitor injuries to Ladd McConkey and Brock Bowers as both are pivotal players to each team's offense. Downgrade the Chargers in Splash Sports, as two of their easiest remaining games happen in Weeks 14 and 16.

  • Chance to win: 69% (ESPN Analytics), 81% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: Chargers -6.5 (-298 moneyline)

  • Future value: 23rd (49% average win probability)

  • ESPN Selection: 3%

5. Kansas City Chiefs (vs. Indianapolis Colts)

If I have a large number of entries, I would consider the Chiefs instead of the Ravens for a small sprinkle. The Ravens are trending to be more than twice as popular of a pick, and the Ravens have the highest average win probability for the rest of the season according to Mike Clay's model. The Chiefs are an especially sneaky pick in the Splash Sports contest, as one of their toughest stretches all season happens from Weeks 12-16, all double-pick weeks.

  • Chance to win: 76% (ESPN Analytics), 70% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: Chiefs -6.5 (-285 moneyline)

  • Future value: 12th (59% average win probability)

  • ESPN Selection: 2%
