Karl Bushby: Hull City welcome adventurer home after 28-year trek from Chile

British adventurer Karl Bushby is set to complete his 31,000-mile, 28-year trek from South America to Hull on Monday and he has been supported by the Premier League club who called on fans to welcome him to City Hall.

At the age of 29, Bushby left Punta Aires, Chile, in 1998 with the aim of walking back home without breaking two self-imposed rules: not to return to the UK until he had completed his journey and not to use transport to advance his mission.

The former paratrooper, now aged 57, will be met by his mother, son and granddaughter when he arrives in his hometown of Hull to end his 28-year odyssey.

"Odysseus was a bit of an amateur. But, you know, I'll cut him some slack -- I haven't met any giant Cyclops," Bushby told The Independent.

While crossing four continents, Bushby has overcome deserts, mountains, jungles and the frozen Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia.

Along the way he says he has had a stand-off with a Polar Bear, entered crocodile-infested water to avoid a guerilla war in Colombia and been rescued from an ice floe by a helicopter.

Bushby swam the English Channel on Oct. 5 to begin the last leg of journey. He has spent the time since walking north, pushing his two-wheeled supply cart which he refers to as "The Beast."

Before crossing the Humber, Bushby recorded a video for Hull City fans which was posted by the Premier League club on Saturday following their 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town at the MKM Stadium.

"Quick shoutout to the lads and lasses in the stadium. Just to let you guys know I'm sitting on the other side of the Humber right here," he said while wearing a Hull shirt.

"Tomorrow I'm crossing that bridge and I'll be back in the city. I'm looking at being back int he city on Monday morning at around 11 'o clock. Would be great to se you all there.

"At some point I'm going to be joining you in the stadium to see a match."

He is due to make his final stop at Queen Victoria Square in the city centre before returning to his mother's house. His mother, Angela, has said she will be waiting to greet him at the garden gate.
