Did VAR get Liverpool's penalty calls wrong against Arsenal? (1:59)

LIVERPOOL -- Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has said he will "definitely" tell Alexander Isak to go down if he is fouled inside the box in future after his team was denied a "clear penalty" against Arsenal.

Kai Havertz scored the only goal on Sunday as the Gunners claimed their first Anfield victory since September 2012. However, Liverpool were left feeling aggrieved after neither referee Andy Madley nor VAR Stuart Attwell awarded a penalty after Isak's shirt was pulled by Jurriën Timber as the striker tried to head a Bradley Barcola cross in the first half.

Rather than going to ground, Isak stayed on his feet and turned around to talk to Timber after the incident.

Appeals for a spot kick after a tussle between Cody Gakpo and Christos Tzolis were also waved away.

"The Alex one is a clear penalty," Iraola told Sky Sports after the game. "You hold the shirt, we can all see that he holds the shirt. Because he doesn't go to the floor, you are not going to call the penalty. I don't understand it.

"That's the problem we have with the game. Because he doesn't dive and go to the floor. The fact that you are even asking me if he should go to the floor, if he goes to the floor, they call the penalty 100%.

"It should be like this but it is what it is. Next time, the managers should tell Alex to go to the floor, otherwise they won't call it."

Asked whether he will tell Isak to go to ground in future, Iraola added: "Yes, definitely."

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk also voiced his frustration about the decision. "I think it was a clear penalty," the defender said. "I've seen it back and I've seen it being given. Today it wasn't meant to be. We have 50 cameras.

"Why does he have to complain when there are so many cameras? Everyone has seen it. In the end it wasn't given and we lose the game unfortunately, so well done to Arsenal."
