James Milner has always been something of a cult hero in soccer, with his work ethic and personable demeanor making him a fan favorite across a 24-year career, especially at the clubs he represented. From Leeds United to Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton, Milner made a career for being the hardest working, indefatigable presence in every team, routinely finishing tops of preseason fitness tests even as he celebrated turning 40 back in January.
He announced his retirement at the end of the 2025-26 season but do you think for one minute that "Milly" has taken it easier now that he's hung up his boots?
Of course he hasn't: On Sunday, he seemingly cruised his way through the 2026 New York City Marathon, completing the course in a remarkable 3:09.04. Not bad, James, not bad at all!
Ahead of our big match today, we spotted @JamesMilner running in the marathon! Congrats to him and all the members running today. YNWA ❤️ https://t.co/yZBV4xGLTL

Looking deeper at his split times, it does seem as though Milner took it easy (well, easier) down the stretch, wrapping the first half in 1:31 before going 1:38 for the final 13 miles, but we forgive him for turning it into more of a fun run from there. That said, an average pace of 7:13 per mile is remarkable; it makes us tired just reading it.
What's next, Milner: climbing Mount Everest? Playing in the NFL? We wouldn't bet against him regardless of what he sets his sights on ...
