Marcus Holman scored three goals, including a 2-pointer, to lead the Boston Cannons to a 12-9 victory over the California Redwoods on Saturday night at Harvard Stadium.
The victory capped a successful homecoming weekend for the Cannons (7-5), who also defeated the Maryland Whipsnakes 14-12 on Friday. Boston received contributions from Coulter Mackesy (two goals, one assist), Jack Regnery (goal, two assists), Connor Kirst (two goals) and Brian Kelly (two goals), while goaltender JC Higginbotham made 15 saves.
The Redwoods (5-6), who needed a victory to clinch a playoff berth, received three-point performances from Finn Thomson (two goals, one assist) and Ryder Garnsey and Aidan Danenza (one goal, two assists each). Dylan Molloy and Brian Tevlin each scored two goals for California.
After the Redwoods ended the first quarter with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead, Boston seized control, going on a 5-0 run in the second quarter, including Holman's 2-pointer at the 1:40 mark, to build a 7-3 halftime advantage. The Redwoods battled back in the third, cutting the deficit to 9-7 on Thomson's second goal of the period. However, Boston closed the quarter with goals from Holman and Kirst to push the lead back to four, and the Cannons never looked back.
Up next: The Redwoods will face the Denver Outlaws at Subaru Park in Philadelphia on Aug. 16 at 3:30 p.m. ET. The Cannons end their regular season and will advance to the PLL playoffs, which begin Aug. 29.
