Brennan O'Neill scored a game-high five points to power the Denver Outlaws to a 14-9 victory over the New York Atlas on Saturday at Harvard Stadium in Boston, securing their spot in the PLL postseason.
O'Neill registered a goal and four assists, while Denver goalie Owen McElroy was impressive in his first start of the season, making a career-high 19 saves. After the Atlas scored the opening goal of the game, Denver (6-5) answered with eight unanswered goals in the first quarter and two more to start the second to take a 10-1 lead that it would never relinquish.
Zach Geddes and Graham Bundy scored two goals apiece, including 2-point goals during the opening frame. Jake Taylor, making his debut for his hometown team, also scored two goals, while Logan Wisnauskas also added two goals and an assist.
The Atlas (3-8), who were led by Matt Traynor (two goals, two assists) and Xander Dickson and Reid Bowering (two goals each), went on a 6-1 scoring run in the second half to cut the deficit to 13-9, but could not get any closer. New York goalie Liam Entenmann made three saves before being replaced by Will Mark, who stopped seven shots in relief.
Up next: The Atlas take on Philadelphia on Aug. 15, while the Outlaws play California on Aug. 16.
