Michigan freshman quarterback Tommy Carr will make his first start Saturday against No. 6 Indiana, a source confirmed to ESPN.
Carr, the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr and younger brother of Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr, replaced Bryce Underwood at halftime Saturday with the Wolverines trailing visiting Penn State 3-0. Tommy Carr led Michigan on three touchdown drives in the second half and had a 12-yard touchdown run with 2:58 remaining that helped seal a 21-18 victory over the Nittany Lions.
Earlier this week, Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham declined to announce who would start this week's home game but called Carr's performance against the Nittany Lions "smooth" and efficient."
Underwood, the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 SC Next 300, had started every game for the Wolverines since arriving on campus last year. But this season, he has completed 58.1% of his passes and has more turnovers (eight) than total touchdowns (seven).
CBS Sports first reported that Underwood had been benched in favor of Carr.
