Army has rewarded head coach Jeff Monken with a new five-year contract, sources told ESPN on Thursday, for the program's consistent success under his direction.
Monken is entering his 13th season with the Black Knights, and has completely revitalized a downtrodden Army program, turning winning at the school into an annual expectation.
Monken, who is 89-63 in 12 seasons at West Point, is second in program history for career victories behind Red Blaik (121). He has led Army to six wins in their last 10 matchups against rival Navy, and 13 victories in the last 19 meetings against Air Force and Navy combined.
Prior to Monken's arrival, the previous five coaches for Army left the program with losing records. Jim Young, who left in 1990, was the last coach to have a winning mark.
Monken's accomplishments include a 2024 American conference championship, which culminated with a victory over Tulane in the league title game. Army finished that year 12-2, the first 12-win season in school history.
He has reached a bowl game in seven of the last 10 years, which came after taking over a program with one winning season in the prior 17.
Monken's new deal, which includes a raise, comes amid a time when the school has increased investment in the program, highlighted by the $170 million Michie Stadium Preservation Project, which is set to open this fall.
Army opens the season with Bryant and then hosts South Florida in Week 2 in a pivotal early American Conference game.
Prior to Army, Monken thrived as the head coach at Georgia Southern, where he went 38-16 with the Eagles and guided the program transition from FCS to FBS football. Georgia Southern made the FCS NCAA playoffs in all three seasons they were eligible under Monken.
