Argentina sets first call-up without Lionel Messi for November friendlies

Argentina's football federation on Tuesday announced their first call-up since Lionel Messi's retirement, with a 28-man list for friendlies against Uruguay on Nov. 13 in Buenos Aires and Costa Rica on Nov. 17 in Córdoba.

The list includes Chelsea's Emiliano Martínez, who underwent surgery after suffering a jaw injury against Everton early last month and has yet to return to action for the Premier League club.

The list also includes three additional goalkeepers: Gerónimo Rulli, Juan Musso, and Santiago Beltrán.

Aaron Anselmino, 21, earned his first call-up. Signed by Chelsea in 2024 in a deal worth $18 million (£13.4m), Anselmino has played on loan for Boca Juniors, Borussia Dortmund and Strasbourg. Back this season with Chelsea, he sustained an injury during a friendly against Malaysia's Johor and has yet to log any official minutes under Xabi Alonso.

Also included in the squad are Manchester City's Enzo Fernández and Gerónimo Rulli, Manchester United's Lisandro Martínez and Roma players Santiago Castro, Matìas Soulè and Leonardo Balerdi.

Chelsea's Valentín Barco and Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister return to the squad along with Julián Álvarez, Giuliano Simeone and Juan Musso of Atlético Madrid. Lyon's Nicolás Tagliafico was included along with Zenit's Román Vega, Bayer Leverkusen players Facundo Medina and Ezequiel Fernández and Como's Máximo Perrone.

From River, Lionel Scaloni has included Thiago Almada, Santiago Beltrán and Gonzalo Montiel along with Palmeiras players Agustín Giay and José Manuel López and Parma's Mariano Troilo as well as Fiorentina's Franco Mastantuono, Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni and Ipswich Town's Exequiel Palacios.

Messi signed off from international football last month with a goal in a 3-0 friendly win against Benin in Buenos Aires.

Messi's 208th and final game for Argentina ended with his 126th goal as the legendary No. 10 played his last game in international football after 21 years, two Copa América titles and a World Cup.
