Sonia Bompastor said the strength of the competition means she cannot afford to rotate her Chelsea side for Women's Super League matches despite facing commitments on multiple fronts.

The Blues beat Roma 2-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday sandwiched between a 3-1 WSL win over Crystal Palace and Sunday's trip to Charlton.

Chelsea lead the way in the early title race having won six of their seven games and Bompastor said it will be up to the same group of players to perform again at the Valley.

"You can't really have the mindset to rotate your team in the league, even when sometimes you've played in the Champions League in midweek," the former OL Lyonnes coach said.

"The level of both competitions doesn't always give you that opportunity. In France you could easily play in the league with a really young team against some teams and you will still get a result.

"Here it's about making sure the recovery between the games is appropriate and as efficient as possible, because the players need to perform at a really good level every three days. When you play for a club like Chelsea, that's what happens."

Arsenal's turnaround

Renée Slegers said Arsenal went "back to basics" to solve the problem of their poor WSL form.

The Gunners had been winless in five in the league prior to last weekend's north London derby victory over Tottenham and go into Sunday's game at home to Aston Villa with confidence.

"The key has been to go back to basics, the fight and the duels and the tactical basics," Slegers said. "We needed to turn it around and we've done that now.

"It's positive and we just have to be really humble, because it's taken us a lot of hard work to get here and to get the last two wins. There's not a single game which is easy."

Contenders eye top spot

Champions Manchester City go to London City Lionesses in a meeting of second versus third with the winner able to go top if Chelsea slip up.

Also on Sunday, Birmingham host Tottenham, Brighton face Crystal Palace and West Ham host Liverpool. Manchester United play Everton on Saturday.
