Bayern Munich-Ajax to inaugurate Nairobi stadium for AFCON 2027

Ajax Amsterdam and Bayern Munich will meet in a friendly in Nairobi, Kenya on Jan. 5 to inaugurate the new Raila Odinga International Stadium.

Kenya will co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Tanzania and Uganda, and the venue in Nairobi is a key part of the plans for the June 19 to July 17 tournament, marking the first time AFCON will be played across three countries and the first in East Africa since 1976 in Ethiopia.

Bayern and Ajax, who have won a combined 10 European Cups/Champions League titles between them, last faced each other in December 2018, when four goals were scored in the final 10 minutes of a thrilling 3-3 draw in the Champions League group stage.

"FC Bayern has millions of fantastic fans in Africa with whom we feel a close connection -- it's a continent with a huge passion for football," Rouven Kasper, a Bayern board member said. "For many years, we have consistently maintained a presence in America and Asia with our 'Audi Summer Tour.'

"Now we have a new opportunity to further strengthen our connection with our fans in Africa too, to allow people to experience FC Bayern first-hand and to underline our club's international appeal. We will be making a further contribution to raising the profile of the Bundesliga and are very much looking forward to this special event."

Bayern's only previous games in Africa were in the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco, at which Pep Guardiola's team beat Guangzhou Evergrande 3-0 and then won the title against Raja Casablanca.
