Mason Greenwood endures hostile reception in Fenerbahce thrashing at Aston Villa

BIRMINGHAM, England -- Mason Greenwood endured a hostile return to England as he was booed in Fenerbahce's 6-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Wednesday in the Champions League with the club's performance leaving the Turkish side's manager Ismail Kartal apologising to the club's fans.

Greenwood, 25, started on the wing for the Turkish side in their Champions League clash in his first match in England for over four years and was subject to a hostile reception with his every touch of the ball booed.

Greenwood's last game for Manchester United was on Jan.22, 2022, as soon after that game, he was arrested and later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour. These charges were dropped in Feb. 2023.

He left United in August 2023 by mutual agreement and has since played for Getafe, Marseille and moved to Fenerbahce in the summer.

But it was not a happy homecoming for Greenwood as his Fenerbahce side were dispatched by Villa. Post-match, Fenerbahce coach Kartal was eager to move on quickly from this result.

"There's not much to say -- if we look at the game in general as a team this score is not earned," Kartal said. "This is the top level of the Champions League but the mistakes for the goals cost us a lot and that's what we experienced today.

"This is not an acceptable situation and we apologise to the fans of our club. Putting this aside we have had our lesson tonight. In a couple of days time we have a very important league game, so we should forget about tonight's game and concentrate on the next one."
