Philippines finally have their first win in the women's football competition at the 20th Asian Games, but their place in the quarterfinals is still not guaranteed.
The Filipinas claimed a vital 2-0 victory over Hong Kong on Thursday to lift Mark Torcaso's side to four points in Group G, setting up a decisive final group-stage clash against three-time Asian Games champions China on Monday.
After coming back to secure a 1-1 draw against Uzbekistan late in their opening match, Philippines needed a response. They got it against Hong Kong, producing a more purposeful attacking display while keeping their first clean sheet of the tournament.
Leach, Ramirez provide the breakthrough
Skye Leach could not have asked for a better moment to score her first international goal.
The forward -- who recently signed with Melbourne Victory in the A-League Women -- reacted quickest after Dionesa Tolentin's initial effort was cleared off the line to put Philippines ahead in the 12th minute.
It was an important early breakthrough for a side that had struggled to turn its chances into goals against Uzbekistan.
The Filipinas continued to press for a second and were duly rewarded after the hour mark.
Megan Murray delivered an inviting cross into the area, allowing Ramirez to find the far post and double Philippines' advantage in the 63rd minute.
The two goals reflected a more direct attacking approach from the Filipinas, who had been forced to settle for a point in their previous match.
More importantly, they gave Torcaso's side the breathing room it needed ahead of the decisive final group game.
Long adds another milestone to an enduring international career
The match also marked another milestone for Philippines captain Hali Long.
The defender earned her 108th international cap, drawing level with former men's captain Phil Younghusband for the most international appearances by a Filipino player.
But the significance of Long's night went beyond the number.
The veteran defender once again anchored the back line as the Filipinas recorded their first clean sheet of the Asian Games, providing the experience Torcaso's side needed in a potentially pivotal group-stage match.
With the knockout stage now within reach, Long's continued presence gives the Filipinas an experienced leader as they prepare for their toughest test of the group.
China presents the final test
