Bayern Munich top Borussia Dortmund to win German Supercup

Bayern Munich laid down a marker for the new season as they beat Klassiker rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to win the German Supercup at Signal Iduna Park.

The victory, inspired by a goal and assist from Michael Olise, gave Bayern their fifth Supercup title in the last seven seasons and a record-extending 12th overall.

"It was an important win to start the season, especially away at Borussia Dortmund," Bayern striker Harry Kane said. "It was a good way to start."

Nathaniel Brown, who made a big-money summer move from Eintracht Frankfurt, broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when he swept in a cross from Olise.

France forward Olise clipped home a second in first-half stoppage time to put the Bundesliga champions in control.

Fábio Silva pulled a goal back for Dortmund with 15 minutes left before Ramy Bensebaini was shown a late red card for a rash tackle on Ismael Saibari.

"I think the second half was good, but we still have to work hard to get to the level Bayern are at," Dortmund coach Niko Kovac said.

Bayern came through a spell of pressure from the home side, with Maximilian Beier firing over, to pick up what they hope will be the first trophy of another successful campaign.

Vincent Kompany's side will begin the defense of their Bundesliga title at home to VfB Stuttgart on Friday, while Dortmund host Hamburg the following day.

"It was a very good first half," Kompany said. "We also showed a lot of determination in the second half. You saw the heart and character of the team. Some of the guys had only trained a few times and played 90 minutes today -- that's impressive.

"From tomorrow focus turns to the next game. We're pleased and happy today, but tomorrow we're hungry again."

Germany winger Jamal Musiala missed the match as he continued his recovery after a change in his medication for a neurological condition saw him twice collapse during Bayern's preseason friendlies.
