Diomande stunner caps Madrid win against former club Leipzig

Real Madrid maintained their perfect start in the Champions League with an emphatic 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday.

Bernardo Silva and Arda Güler struck either side of halftime at the Bernabeu before late goals from Kylian Mbappé and former Leipzig star Yan Diomande wrapped up a convincing win for the Spanish giants.

Leipzig were competitive for most of the first half but were outplayed after Silva's opener -- his first goal for Madrid -- after 43 minutes.

Güler poked in to double the lead and Mbappé could not be denied, claiming his 12th goal of the season after 83 minutes.

Tidiam Gomis did pull one back for the German side to make the score 3-1 but Diomande, who left Leipzig in a deal worth a potential €140 million ($189m) in the summer, had the final say with a stunning volley.

The game took some time to warm up with the first shot not arriving until Leipzig's Ridle Baku fired tamely at Thibaut Courtois after 20 minutes. Madrid countered immediately but Mbappé dragged an effort wide.

Leipzig threatened again when they broke from deep and David Raum's pass was deflected into the path of Rômulo but his shot was well saved by Courtois.

Vinícius Júnior tried his luck for Madrid after bursting down the left and cutting inside but Maarten Vandevoordt pushed his long-range attempt wide.

Antonio Nusa was lively for Leipzig on the left and had a shot blocked before delivering a cross for Romulo, but he could only head straight at Courtois.

Jude Bellingham blazed over for Madrid before Christopher Nkunku spurned a gilt-edged chance for Leipzig when he raced through on goal only to be denied by Courtois.

Madrid took control just before the interval when Silva pounced on a goalkeeping error.

Vandevoordt blocked Güler's initial strike with his foot but the ball squirmed between his legs and Silva snaffled the chance from close range.

Real chased more after the break with Federico Valverde bursting into the area and forcing a good save from Vandevoordt.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 52nd minute as Bellingham got to the byline and stood up a cross for Mbappe at the back post. The Frenchman rose and headed back across goal and Güler made sure it crossed the line.

Güler went close to another after exchanging passes with Valverde in a sweeping move but his first-time shot was too close to Vandevoordt.

Mbappé put the result beyond all doubt when he received a pass from Diomande on the edge of the area and curled a shot into the top corner.

Leipzig were not quite done and at least got on the scoresheet as Christoph Baumgartner cut through the defence to play in substitute Gomis for a consolation.

Madrid had the final word, however, as Diomande added their fourth with a thunderous volley from a Brahim Díaz cross.
