Carter Gordon is back in the No. 10 jersey for the second Test with Japan in Townsville on Saturday afternoon, a match that will see the Wallabies field the 1000th player in their proud history.
As reported by ESPN earlier in the week, Gordon has overcome the calf injury that has kept him out of the Wallabies since they were pipped in Sydney by Ireland last month.
"Well it's great to have three fit 10s in the team at the moment," Kiss said of Gordon's return. "Declan [Meredith], Donno [Ben Donaldson] and Carter, really good men, they play similar but also have their points of difference... it'll be great to see Carter out there and, touch wood, dodges injury.
Queenslander Massimo De Lutiis will meanwhile have the honour of being the 1000th player to represent the Wallabies, so long as he takes to the field from the bench at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
The subject of a battle between Ireland and Australia earlier this year, De Lutiis will offer cover for Taniela Tupou at tighthead prop with Allan Alaalatoa given the week off after last week's brutal conditions in Osaka.
Both the Queensland Reds and Rugby Australia were forced to come to the table when De Lutiis was linked with a move to Irish club Ulster and a potential switch in international allegiance.
Wallabies coach Les Kiss has made eight changes to the starting side in total, with centre Isaac Henry and lock Lachlan Shaw to make their run-on debuts as replacements for Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and Josh Canham respectively. Suaalii suffered a minor hamstring injury in last week's game while Canham is being rested after starting all four of Australia's Tests so far this year.
There is also a first Test of the year for Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, who joins Shaw in the second row as the replacement for the suspended Miles Amatosero. Angus Bell returns to the starting side at loosehead prop to partner Tupou and hooker Josh Nasser in the front-row.
The final changes come in the back-row where Charlie Cale and Carlo Tizzano replace Rob Valetini and Fraser McReight respectively.
"It gives me an opportunity, and our coaching team, to look at how we can shift and shape that back-row at times; you never know when you need to lean on our resources, and this is a great opportunity to do that.
"Charlie has proven what he can do with his speed and his agility; his lineout prowess, he's very quick into the air so that creates those opportunities," Kiss said of his back-row combination. "And Carlo had a wonderful game against Italy recently and I think just throwing him out there with his energy will be fantastic... and we're hopeful we can get Carlo and Fraser on the field at the same time and see if we can explore that as an option in our game as well."
Gordon's return comes at the expense of Declan Meredith, who endured a tough outing in Osaka last weekend. Meredith has started each of the three Tests since Gordon was injured against Ireland last month, but misses a place in the matchday 23 in Townsville with Ben Donaldson preferred on the bench.
"I'm keen to see all the 10s, and that's on me. I want to see all the 10s and how they operate. Three games for Declan and I have got good information on him now, he is only going to get better for us, that's for sure. The tuition that he has had under Stephen Larkham is obviously coming through.
"And in a way I had to move that position [on], I want to see Carter and I want to see Donno off the bench again covering 15."
Kiss began his tenure as Wallabies coach with a 35-32 win last weekend, but the Queenslander will be looking for a far more complete performance in Townsville, even considering the vast array of changes.
"If anything we probably overplayed our hand a few times, we tried to attack to space that was "fool's gold", and we probably needed to be a bit more direct," Kiss said. "When we were direct, I think we made a good impression on the game and could show our skills."
