New Wallabies coach Les Kiss has sprung one surprise in his first Wallabies squad, naming young gun Isaac Henry in his first ever national squad.
Taking over the group ahead of the upcoming two Test series against Japan in Osaka and Townsville, Kiss has looked to consistency and continuity, naming a relatively unchanged squad from Joe Schmidt's Nations Championship with injuries to James Slipper and Len Ikitau opening the door for Waratahs prop Isaac Kailea and Henry to join the 34-player squad which will assemble in Sydney on Tuesday.
As had been expected of the former Queensland Reds coach, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto has been recalled to the group after failing to earn selection under Schmidt ahead of the Nations Championship series that saw the Wallabies win just one clash of the three, defeating Italy following two straight losses to Ireland and France.
Salakaia-Loto had been a shock omission from last year's British and Irish Lions series, but was recalled to the group for the failed end of year Europe tour, but was sparingly seen off the bench.
The towering lock had been spotted in Queensland's Premier club rugby competition in Brisbane and ran out at flanker for the Barbarians in the UK over the last month and was sitting in the stands during the Wallabies "soul-destroying" 42-22 loss to France at Suncorp.
Salakaia-Loto is expected to bring his power and presence to a tight five that had struggled to bend the line for the full 80-minutes across the three Test series.
Asked if 29-year-old was a walk in for his squad, Kiss was adamant no member was guaranteed a spot.
"It was a conversation and a robust conversation with the coaches," Kiss told reporters in Sydney. "No-one's guaranteed a position. I'll make promises to no-one.
"He's worked hard. He had a game at the BaaBaas [Barabarians], he's ready. We'll give him a chance to go in there.
"I'm very focused on making sure we strengthen our tight headlocks. Miles [Amotesero] has had a chance of seeing him in there. That looks good.
"Jeremy [Williams], he can definitely play there in that area. Lukhan is a big powerful figure, so to bring him into play, we just get to see him in the environment as well."
Although the squad remains relatively unchanged for the upcoming Tests, Kiss has promised there will be change to how he manages and runs the Wallabies camp.
"Maybe my dad jokes are better," Kiss said of how he'll differ from Schmidt.
"There will be change; I'm a different personality in some ways to Joe's leadership.
"How that manifests, we'll find out. I'll just be me, driving what it is to be a new 'us'.
"I want players to be themselves, bring their personalities to the fore. I want them to know our strength is in our diversity and who we are."
Henry, meanwhile, is the only uncapped player to earn a place in Kiss's squad, capping off a rugby journey that has been derailed several times through injury.
"Isaac has had some troubles with injuries over time and he's just worked so hard to get his body right and I think we're seeing the fruition of that work right now," Kiss said when asked of the centre's selection.
"His work over the last week and a half he's been involved has been exceptional in Wallaby camp.
"He has a capacity to play two positions really strongly, either 12 or 13, and it was a call that came up and it's a tough call for Flooky, he's a good man, he's a 13, but we need to cover 12 and 13 and we know that he [Henry] can cover wing too. So it's the diversity he gives me and the team is great. But he should be proud of what he's done. He's worked hard to get where he has."
Meanwhile, Kailea last played in the gold jersey in 2024, appearing eight times in his debut season, and has been brought in as Kiss prepares to develop his front-row ahead of next year's home Rugby World Cup.
A minor ankle injury has ruled Ikitau out of the series resulting in the elevation of Henry, while Hunter Paisami has also returned to the group having missed the last Test in Perth, alongside Josh Nasser, who returns following a concussion sustained in the side's loss to France.
In a boost for the group, Carter Gordon also makes his return to the squad after he suffered a calf injury against Ireland and was ruled out for the remainder of the Nations Championship. He joins Ben Donaldson and Declan Meredith as fly-half options.
In a change from Schmidt, Kiss has named an outright captain with Harry Wilson retaining the role he had enjoyed under Schmidt for the last 12-months but had not been able to lock down permanently.
"I think he's grown and wants to grow further," Kiss said of Wilson, who was thrust into the role by Schmidt despite not captaining the Reds.
"It wasn't just because of the captaincy, but there was an understanding of ... what leadership really is."
