The NHL season is finally here, and with it comes renewed optimism and high hopes for fans' favorite teams. It also brings fresh lids for goalies across the league.
Goaltenders continue to push the envelope when it comes to their masks. Some like to keep it simple, while others enjoy standing out. Unique colors, nods to the city they play in and favorite movies are all represented in designs.
Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson fits into the latter category, highlighting two films with D.C. ties. Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Joseph Woll shows off his love for the "Lord of the Rings" series on one lid, while also repping the City of Brotherly Love on another. And of course, it wouldn't be a list of mask designs without Edmonton Oilers' Tristan Jarry repping his dogs.
Here's a look at some of the notable goalie masks this season.
Anaheim Ducks
Dostal first unveiled this mask in April, and it looks to have carried over to the new season. It's a simple design with Ducks logos scattered throughout.
Boston Bruins
There is no shortage of Boston-specific elements to Swayman's mask, which follows a historical theme. It includes landmarks such as the USS Constitution and Boston Custom House Tower. And of course, there's a bruin above the face mask.
Buffalo Sabres
Nicknamed "Buffalo Rage," Luukkonen brings back this look from last year and it features an animal breaking out from ice for a menacing design.
Lyon's mask also carries over from last season and includes a buffalo on both sides, with a drawing of legendary Sabres goalie Dominik Hasek also featured.
Calgary Flames
The elements of Wolf's mask are hard to ignore: a huge wolf and flames, plus a cowboy on the side for a neat design.
Carolina Hurricanes
Bussi first debuted this look during Carolina's Stanley Cup run last season. It returns with the Canes logo on the side and puzzle pieces on the top, shining a light on autism awareness.
Kochetkov has worn this mask for a couple of seasons, and it won't be hung up in the locker room for good anytime soon. The raging bear on top is back for another campaign.
Chicago Blackhawks
Paying homage to the 100-year anniversary of the Blackhawks, Knight rocked this mask last season.
Colorado Avalanche
Wedgewood has a neatly painted design with two unlikely figures featured: Daphne Blake from "Scooby-Doo" and Scarlet Witch from Marvel.
The Colorado references are strong with Blackwood's clean and crisp design.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Greaves has a simple lid with the Blue Jackets' cannon included on the right and left side of the look.
Dallas Stars
Oettinger has his options this season and they follow the same theme: monster otters. There's a light and dark green version, with each of them equally menacing.
Detroit Red Wings
White tentacles slither around Gibson's lid for a sleek and chic design.
Edmonton Oilers
Tristan Jarry
A dog is a man's best friend, and in this case, a dog is a goalie's best friend. Jarry has his dogs prominently featured on his mask with Tom and Jerry from the iconic cartoon show also painted on the top.
Florida Panthers
Playing for the Panthers, it's no surprise Markstrom has the animal on the top with glowing red eyes and an open mouth under the face mask. There are other subtle details, too, like the Fort Lauderdale skyline.
Similar to Markstrom, the Fort Lauderdale skyline is featured on Schmid's mask, as well as a panther on top.
Los Angeles Kings
The beach isn't too far from the Kings' home in downtown Los Angeles, therefore, Kuemper's look includes references to the city's famous beaches.
Los Angeles is also known as the "City of Angels." Forsberg leans into the angel theme with sculptures painted on both sides. His two children are also included on the back with angel wings next to them.
Minnesota Wild
Wallstedt's mask is all about bringing the wild to life with pine trees popping out.
Montreal Canadiens
Montembeault first unveiled this python-themed look last season, and it's back for another campaign.
Dobes' lid follows a "Game of Thrones" theme with a giant wolf on top that has glowing swords sticking up under it.
Nashville Predators
Saros' yellow lid is a continuation of his previous styles with predators on the side and a menacing skull on top.
New Jersey Devils
Allen has three simple looks to choose from, each of them with similar designs: a devils logo on top being the main carryover.
The Devils' colors are prominent on Daws' lid for a simple, yet effective look.
New York Islanders
Playing to the theme of the Islanders, the retro design includes a ghost pirate captain on one side and a larger ship on the other for a neat lid.
New York Rangers
It's no surprise that playing in New York prompted a big apple being painted on Shesterkin's mask. However, it also includes multiple New York City-specific details, such as the city skyline and Brooklyn Bridge.
Korpisalo is throwing it back to the 1970s and '80s for a classic feel that also includes New York City-specific details.
Ottawa Senators
If you had a mask design inspired by Norse mythology on your bingo card, it's your lucky day. Ullmark's lid focuses on the battle between the giant wolf Fenrir and the Norse god Tyr. Both are featured prominently for a menacing look while the Senators logo is on the other side.
Philadelphia Flyers
Joseph Woll
Woll might have the best mask rotation in the league this season.
One of them is a tribute to "The Lord of the Rings" series, of which Woll is a big fan. It's about the battle between Gandalf and Balrog, which included the famous line: "You shall not pass!" The other pays homage to Philadelphia and prominently features Benjamin Franklin flying a kite, the Liberty Bell and U.S. Constitution, among other items.
Vladar made headlines last season with a Metallica/Iron Maiden-themed mash up lid, and it returns once again.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Hailing from Russia, Murashov wanted a lid that incorporated elements of his home and Pittsburgh. The outcome is one that focuses on Russia in one half, and Pittsburgh on the other.
No different than Murashov, Silovs pays homage to his home country of Latvia. Most notably, his design includes details from the Latvian hockey team emblem on the chin.
San Jose Sharks
Askarov's mask includes many different shades of blue with a menacing shark on top.
Sharks are all over Nedeljkovic's lid, but "Ned" on the chin might be the detail that stands out the most.
Seattle Kraken
Daccord is a huge fan of Formula 1, therefore, it's no surprise that his new mask focuses on that love with a custom F1 car painted on alongside other Seattle-specific elements. There's a darker lid he can choose from, too, appropriate for the Kraken's all-black uniforms.
Designed by local Seattle glass artist Preston Singletary, Grubauer first debuted this mask in 2024 for the Kraken's Indigenous Peoples Night. The two-sided design remains in Grubauer's mix as he wore it during the preseason.
St. Louis Blues
It's a retro look for Binnington with drawings on the side that are close to home for the goaltender.
Hofer also leans into a classic design, a simple white one with musical notes throughout it.
Tampa Bay Lightning
"Gzhel," a style of blue and white ceramics inspired by a village near Moscow, is often the theme of Vasilevskiy's lids and it continues this season with a sweet look.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Bobrovsky's lid might not have too many elements, but that doesn't mean it won't stand out. It's built on a brick wall background with the Archangel Michael prominently drawn on one side, while the Maple Leafs logo is on the other.
Chrome is the name of the game for Stolarz's mask, which was created in chrome FX, a special coat for a unique look.
Utah Mammoth
A huge mammoth is the star of Vejmelka's design, but there are other elements of Utah included, like the Delicate Arch.
Vancouver Canucks
Lankinen has a simple design full of nods to Vancouver, including the city's skyline and mountains.
Vegas Golden Knights
A menacing dragon covers Hill's mask for an eye-popping gold-and-red look.
Inspired by the 1993 Western film "Tombstone," Hart unveiled this lid before the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs.
Washington Capitals
Logan Thompson
Thompson is known for his movie-themed masks and this season is no different. One pays homage to the 1996 film "Mars Attacks!" while the other is about the 2005 hit movie "Wedding Crashers." Both movies include ties to Washington, D.C., making this one that hits close to home, too.
Winnipeg Jets
Skinner has two contrasting colored designs to pick from, but they are equally sleek. The all-white mask boasts a polar bear with a hockey stick and the Provencher Bridge. The darker blue one follows an aviation theme for a look that pops.
