Jim Harbaugh backs Mike McDaniel, Justin Herbert despite Chargers' post-bye dud

Not much changed for the Los Angeles Chargers coming off their bye week.

Another loss. More struggles on offense. And Jim Harbaugh continuing to back both offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel and quarterback Justin Herbert.

Herbert threw two interceptions in Sunday's 24-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium, and any hope that the bye week would help the offense quickly dissipated as the Chargers have now gone two straight games without scoring a touchdown.

Harbaugh, who opted not to make a change at offensive coordinator during the bye, was pressed on the status of McDaniel again after Sunday's loss, which made the Chargers just the sixth team in the Super Bowl era (since 1966) to start 0-7 after making the playoffs the previous season.

"Yes," he said when asked whether McDaniel will continue to call plays. "Not going to address anything. I'm focused on this game, and that's my focus."

Asked what he has seen to make him confident McDaniel should remain in the role, Harbaugh said, "Yeah, our motivation is dedication to getting it. To getting it changed, to getting it fixed.

"I said I'm focused on this game. I will go watch this tape. And I believe in our guys. I believe in our players, our coaches, and, yeah, it's us who are the ones that the challenge is with, and we're the ones that, we're the only ones that can fix it."

Herbert's play was also a talking point postgame.

He went 24-of-32 for 257 yards and now has a league-high 10 interceptions. The second pick was particularly shocking, with Herbert seemingly not seeing Trent McDuffie as the underneath defender in coverage on tight end Charlie Kolar and throwing it right to the Rams' star cornerback.

This is Herbert's fifth season with at least 10 interceptions in his seven years with the Chargers, and it seems likely he will blow past his career high of 15 picks in 17 games during the 2021 campaign.

"Yeah, I mean, that's part of the game, and it's the unfortunate part of where we're at. And I'd love to have played better and made better decisions, but, you know, I haven't, and that's something I have to work on and continue to get better at," he said.

Herbert has also fumbled seven times and lost two of them. That number should be three, but Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald couldn't pick up a strip-sack along the sideline.

"Not been in this position that many times either here, you know, as a coach," Harbaugh said. "But we got to be dedicated ourselves to getting this turned. That's where we're at."

The Chargers host the Houston Texans next Sunday.
