SEATTLE -- The already banged-up San Francisco 49ers receiver corps lost another key contributor Sunday when Deebo Samuel suffered a third-quarter hamstring injury and was almost immediately ruled out for the rest of the game.
After the Niners' 32-29 victory, coach Kyle Shanahan said he wasn't yet sure the severity of Samuel's injury, though Samuel was moving slowly in the team's locker room. Samuel will have more tests done in the next 24 hours to determine when he can return. The 49ers have an extra day of rest this week as they meet the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football in Week 6.
Samuel, who was favoring his right hamstring earlier in the game, left with 5:06 left in the third quarter. On the play, Samuel carried off the left side with Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas bringing him down.
As Samuel went to the ground, he lost the ball and attempted to recover it. But Samuel was unable to reel it back in and then stayed down because of the injury.
49ers medical personnel ran on to the field to help Samuel, who stayed down for a couple of minutes before he slowly made his way to San Francisco's sideline.
Soon after, San Francisco ruled out a potential return. Samuel finished his day with two catches for 21 yards and a pair of carries for 4 yards.
In addition to Samuel's departure, 49ers receiver Jacob Cowing suffered an ankle injury a few plays later on a kick return. Cowing was initially questionable to return but he did come back and finish the game.
Including Cowing, the Niners finished the game with four just receivers available: Mike Evans, Jordan Watkins and Brandin Cooks.
San Francisco entered Sunday without three of their top four wideouts, as Ricky Pearsall (knee), De'Zhaun Stribling (ankle) and Demarcus Robinson (ankle) are on injured reserve.
After the game, Shanahan said he wasn't sure if veteran wideout Christian Kirk, who is also on injured reserve with a calf injury, would return to practice this week, though he thought his initial suspicion is that it was unlikely.
