MELBOURNE, Australia -- San Francisco 49ers rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling suffered a left ankle injury in the second quarter Thursday and did not return.
After the Niners' 27-7 win against the Los Angeles Rams, coach Kyle Shanahan said that initial testing didn't provide full results on the severity of Stribling's injury, which will require more testing after the team flies the 16 hours back to the Bay Area.
"They checked his Achilles," Shanahan said. "They said that was intact, but they're not exactly sure of the magnitude of the ankle injury."
Stribling tweaked the ankle earlier in the game but returned for the Niners' possession midway through the second quarter. On the third play of that drive, Stribling pulled up while running an inside breaking route and went down without contacting any defenders.
Fellow receivers Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel stood nearby as Stribling received medical attention and required help to the sideline. Soon after, Stribling rode a cart to the locker room.
The 49ers ruled out Stribling's return with a few minutes left before halftime, ending his debut before it could really even get going.
The Niners selected Stribling with the first pick of the second round (No. 33) in April's NFL draft. The former Ole Miss star had a strong training camp and earned a big role in the offense entering the season.
With Stribling out, the Niners rotated through the rest of their available receivers with Evans, Samuel and Demarcus Robinson catching touchdown passes from quarterback Brock Purdy.
Stribling wasn't the only 49ers injury the team is concerned about.
Tight end Jake Tonges also left in the second quarter and did not return because of a knee injury, which Shanahan later said looked serious.
"It wasn't good," Shanahan said. "It's not an ACL. It's MCL I believe, but there's some issues with it that we got to see how it is. There's a little more information to it, but we don't know yet."
