Toronto Raptors star Kawhi Leonard is expected to miss a period of weeks due to swelling in his left knee, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.

An MRI on Leonard's knee showed no structural damage, but both sides will use the time to ramp up Leonard. The 35-year-old had an uncommon offseason, as he could not join the Raptors until after a resolution was reached in the NBA's investigation into the LA Clippers' salary cap circumvention case.

Leonard issued a statement on X saying that's he's frustrated to be sitting out.

"Yeah, it's always frustrating missing time," Leonard posted on X. "I came back to compete with this team and I'm focused on getting back to 100. Toronto, I've appreciated the love since I've been back. Returning soon."

This injury is to Leonard's left knee. He has previously had issues with his right knee, having multiple surgeries for his meniscus and ACL. In a statement, the team said Leonard will be reevaluated in one week.

In two games this season, Leonard is averaging 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals. He missed his first game of the season on Sunday due to swelling in his knee.

Leonard is in his first year back with the Raptors after being traded to Toronto from the Clippers this offseason after a scandal-marred conclusion to his six seasons there. He agreed to a two-year, $115 million contract extension with the Raptors after the trade.

Leonard previously played one season in Toronto, leading the Raptors to their only NBA championship in 2019 before leaving for the Clippers in free agency.
