Adley Rutschman, who was acquired at last week's trade deadline, was activated off the injured list Tuesday and in the lineup at catcher and batting third in his Boston Red Sox debut against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Rutschman, who has been out since July 18 because of left wrist inflammation, had a two-game rehab stint with Triple-A Worcester over the weekend, starting at catcher and then designated hitter, going a combined 1-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.
The three-time All-Star, who is wearing jersey No. 31 with Boston, is hitting .251 with eight home runs and 47 RBIs.
In a related roster move, Red Sox catcher Jake Rogers was designated for assignment. Boston also transferred infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa (left forearm) to the 60-day injured list.
Rutschman joined Boston ahead of the MLB trade deadline last Monday, with the Red Sox trading prospects Anthony Eyanson, Kyson Witherspoon and Enddy Azocar, catcher Carlos Narvaez and a player to be named later to the Baltimore Orioles.
Rutschman, 28, can become a free agent after the 2027 World Series.
In other news, interim manager Chad Tracy said outfielder Roman Anthony, who has been on the injured list with a torn ligament in a finger on his right hand since May 7, is hitting off a machine and is "getting closer" to making a rehab assignment.
"It's as close as you can get to live pitching without facing live pitching," Tracy told reporters. "That has started getting incorporated into his routine, and he'll now carry that for a little bit of time."
Signed last year as a rookie to an eight-year, $130 million contract, Anthony is hitting .229 with one home run in 130 plate appearances this season.
