Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage had surgery to repair damage to his left meniscus on Tuesday, but manager John Schneider isn't ruling him out for the season and will continue to evaluate his recovery over the next few weeks.
In another move, the Blue Jays placed right-hander Jamison Taillon on the 15-day injured list with right forearm tendinitis.
Yesavage, 23, hasn't pitched since exiting an Aug. 4 start against the Houston Astros in the second inning.
"In the next couple of weeks, we'll know," Schneider said about a timeline for Yesavage. "The meniscus is weird. Sometimes, it can be fairly quick depending on how the person responds to it. I don't want to say I'm very optimistic, but I like the fact it's not the year. We know he's going to get back to throwing again."
He is 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA and 91 strikeouts over 18 starts this season.
Yesavage was the 20th pick overall in the 2024 MLB Draft by Toronto out of East Carolina, and he set a Blue Jays' postseason record last October striking out 11 in 5 1/3 innings no-hit innings against the New York Yankees in the ALDS.
Taillon, who was traded to the Blue Jays from the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 2, underwent an MRI after exiting his first home start in Toronto after four scoreless innings on Monday.
Taillon, 34, is 2-6 with a 5.68 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 17 starts this season.
In a corresponding roster move, the Blue Jays recalled right-hander Chase Lee from Triple-A Buffalo.
The Blue Jays are 3½ games behind the Texas Rangers for the final wild-card spot entering Tuesday's games.
