Texas Southern holds off MVSU, 73-65
CLARKSDALE, Miss. -- Jose Rodriguez came off the bench to add the hot offensive hand and lead Texas Southern to a 73-65 win at Mississippi Valley State Saturday.
The Tigers built an eight-point lead in the first half, leading 44-36 at intermission, and maintained it the second.
Rodriguez was 6 of 10 from the field and converted 7 of 10 free throws to lead the Tigers with 19 points. As a team Texas Southern (11-14, 7-6 SWAC) shot 44 percent from the field (24 of 54) and hit 7 of 18 from long range. Lawrence Johnson-Danner was 4 of 6 from 3-point range and finished with 16 points, with Madarious Gibbs and D.D. Scarver adding 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Jordan Washington scored 15 points to lead Mississippi Valley State (8-19, 4-10). Vacha Vaughn and Blake Rallling had 11 and 10 points, respectively, and Vaughn came off the bench to grab nine rebounds.
