Florida International holds off FAU 66-57
MIAMI -- Dennis Mavin turned a Jerome Frink steal into a three-point play with 39 seconds left as Florida International held on to defeat Florida Atlantic 66-57 Saturday.
FAU had trimmed a 10-point deficit to 5 with 90 seconds left but on its second chance to get closer Frink stole the ball and fed Mavin for the back-breaker.
Tymell Murphy led FIU (11-9, 3-2 Conference USA) with 14 points and 14 rebounds and Mavin had 14. Frink had 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals and Rakeem Buckles had 12 points. FIU had a 43-29 advantage on the boards.
Pablo Bertone hit four 3-pointers to lead Florida Atlantic (7-13, 2-3) with 19 points. Justin Raffington added 12 and 10 rebounds.
Florida International led 34-24 at halftime and enjoyed that lead well into the second half before the Owls came back. Bertone hit a 3 to pull FAU within 49-37 with 8:47 left.
