Arkansas State holds off Marshall rally 83-82
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Arkansas State opened the game with five 3-pointers -- three by Brandon Reed -- as part of a 19-5 run and held on to defeat Marshall 83-82 on Saturday night.
The margin came down to a missed 3-pointer by Marshall's Kareem Canty that became a two-point put back by Ryan Taylor at the buzzer.
Arkansas State (6-4) had a second burst of five 3-pointers, including three straight by Kirk Van Slyke, in a 22-6 run to lead 47-31 at halftime.
Marshall outscored the Red Wolves 51-36 in the second half. Canty scored 22 points -- 122 on four 3s after halftime. TyQuane Goard, averaging six points, went off for a career-high 21 with 13 rebounds. He and Canty combined for 13 points to cut a double-digit lead to 76-74.
Reed matched a season high with 21 points for Arkansas State, Van Slyke and Melvin Johnson III scored 16 each.
