South Florida rolls past Bethune-Cookman 91-65
TAMPA, Fla. -- Newcomer Corey Allen Jr. had 21 points, seven rebounds, nine assists and three steals, leading South Florida to a 91-65 victory against Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday night.
Four other players scored in double figures for South Florida (2-0). Seniors Victor Rudd had 14, Musa Abdul-Aleem 12 and Martino Brock finished with 10.
The Bulls also got 13 points from 6-foot-8 freshman Chris Perry, who was named American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week after collecting 14 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals in his debut Saturday night against Tennessee Tech.
Clemmye Owens led Bethune-Cookman (1-1) with 14 points. The Wildcats got 13 each from Daquan Brown and Mikel Trapp, and 10 from Tony Kynard.
USF built a 38-20 lead late in the first half with a 22-6 run that included all 13 points scored before the break by Allen, a junior college transfer.
Bethune-Cookman immediately responded with a 10-0 run that cut the deficit early in the second, but the Wildcats made only 21 of 72 shots (29.2 percent) from the floor for the game.
The Bulls took a 38-29 into the intermission, having outscored the Wildcats 20-8 in the paint and 10-0 off the fast break. Those margins grew to 26 and 20, respectively, by the end of the game. USF also finished with a 25-13 scoring advantage from the free-throw line en route to its most productive outing in nearly four years.
USF leads the all-time series 14-1 and has hosted every meeting except for one on a neutral court.
