Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc to take grid penalties in Brazil

Max Verstappen and both Ferrari drivers will incur grid penalties at the São Paulo Grand Prix after new power unit components were fitted to their cars ahead of Saturday's qualifying session at Interlagos.

Verstappen will start from the back of the grid after exceeding his seasonlong quota for internal combustion engines, turbochargers and exhausts with replacement parts fitted to his Red Bull ahead of final practice.

Lewis Hamilton will join Verstappen at the back of the grid after a technical issue in final practice, and will be fitted with an all-new engine as a result.

The seven-time world champion was set to take just a 10-place grid penalty alongside his teammate Charles Leclerc after the Italian team exceeded its quota for internal combustion engines on both cars.

There had been speculation that Ferrari would stagger the changes on Hamilton and Leclerc's cars over the next two races to reduce the chances of their drivers starting next to each other on the grid, but the identical penalties in São Paulo mean that is not the case.

Hamilton, Leclerc and team principal Fred Vasseur held clear-the-air talks on Thursday evening in Brazil after an incident between the pair on the opening lap of the Mexico City Grand Prix saw both drivers' chances of victory heavily compromised.

Mercedes driver George Russell is also facing a five-place grid penalty after his team fitted the second internal combustion engine beyond his quota for the season on Friday.

Cadillac driver Sergio Pérez is also due to start from the back of the grid after his team changed the Ferrari internal combustion engine, turbocharger and MGU-K on his car ahead of final practice on Saturday.
