Carlos Sainz has been dealt a major blow at his home race after he was handed a three-place grid penalty for the Spanish Grand Prix.
The Williams driver, who is a circuit ambassador and has given his design advice and track expertise to the brand-new Madring, will now start a mere 20th on the grid for Sunday's race.
Sainz was handed the penalty for impeding Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas in Q1 of qualifying.
The stewards said: "The team (Williams) failed to inform the driver of Car 55 (Sainz) about Car 77 (Bottas) closing in on a flying lap and the driver did not take any action to make way for the incoming car.
"The Stewards determine that Car 55 unnecessarily impeded Car 77."
This means Fernando Alonso, Sergio Pérez and Bottas will be promoted in the order for Sunday's debut race which starts at 3 p.m. local time (2 p.m. BST / 9 a.m. ET).
