Shakira Austin, a 6-foot-5 junior center at Colonial Forge (Stafford, Virginia) and the No. 5 prospect in the espnW HoopGurlz Super 60 for the 2017-18 class, has committed to Maryland.
Austin made her verbal commitment Sunday night during dinner after attending the Terrapins' 100-81 win over Iowa.
"I didn't know I was going to do it," Austin said. "But I built a relationship with the coaches and I have a comfort level with Maryland, and it happened."
With elite athleticism and speed, Austin skyrocketed up the national rankings over the summer. She's a shot-blocking presence in the key, and there's still room to add polish on offense.
Maryland coaches have been regulars at Austin's high school games, and Austin would regularly make the hour-plus drive to watch the Terrapins.
"Coach [Brenda] Frese and I would talk on game days and I got to know the whole staff," Austin said. "I feel that going to Maryland, I will maximize my potential."
Austin had also visited West Virginia, Virginia Tech and Georgetown.
The Terrapins, whose freshman class was ranked the top recruiting class in 2015-16, didn't sign any players in the 2016-17 class during the early signing period. But Frese is well on her way to a great one for 2017-18. In addition to Austin, the Terrapins also have a verbal commitment from point guard Taylor Mikesell, who is ranked 22nd in the class.
With Austin's commitment, half of the 2017-18 top 10 is off the board. No. 7 Charli Collier (Connecticut), No. 8 Jenna Brown (Notre Dame), No. 9 Sedona Prince (Texas) and No. 10 Destanni Henderson (South Carolina) previously announced their commitments.
