Rose Kadzere scored a late winner as tournament outsiders Malawi came from behind to defeat Ghana 2-1 in Sunday's second Women's Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal, securing their spot at next year's World Cup in the process.
Ghana took an early lead through Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, but Temwa Chawinga equalised five minutes later, before Kadzere extended Malawi's fairytale run with a 79th-minute winner.
The Scorchers, who had never qualified for a major tournament before this year's WAFCON, were ranked 153rd in the world before the competition began but can now look forward to a spot at next year's World Cup after securing the last of Africa's four automatic places.
Malawi, who have already defeated Nigeria and eliminated Zambia at this year's event, will now meet Algeria in Wednesday's second semifinal in Rabat's Olympic Stadium.
Boye-Hlorkah gave Ghana a seventh-minute lead with a cool right-footed volley after Malawi failed to clear their lines. Alice Kusi's determination down the right flank stole the ball away from the impressive Ireen Khumalo, and while Doris Boaduwaa was beaten to her cross, Boye-Hlorkah kept her composure to finish calmly from the knock-down.
The Black Queens' advantage was short-lived, as captain Chawinga let fly with a ferocious effort from the edge of the box, and her effort deflected beyond Cynthia Konlan.
Ghana thought they'd re-taken the lead in the 54th minute when Boaduwaa leapt to meet Kusi's cross from the right. However, the Video Assistant Referee intervened to rule out the goal after deeming that right-winger Kusi had been offside in the build-up.
As they had done against Zambia in the Moroccan capital in their final group game, Malawi rode out the storm before striking late, and increasingly began putting pressure on the Ghana goal during the latter stages.
They got their reward 11 minutes from time, when Kadzere spotting a space in the Ghana backline, raced onto a cross from Chawinga before advancing towards Konlan and slotting the ball beyond the advancing keeper.
Despite their run, Malawi will be outsiders when they face Algeria in the second semifinal on Wednesday, with hosts Morocco set to face Cameroon in the other semi following the latter's 1-0 triumph over holders Nigeria in Casablanca on Sunday.
