USA cruises to gold medal at FIBA Americas U16 championship

There's winning gold, and then there's this.

The USA U16 team went 5-0 at the FIBA Americas U16 championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and won its games by an average of 53.8 points. It led the field in field goal percentage, rebounds, blocks, assists and steals.

It scored 100 more points than any other team in the field.

Aliyah Boston, a 6-foot-4 post player from Worcester Academy (Massachusetts), was named MVP of the tournament after averaging 11.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.

Zia Cooke, a 5-7 point guard from Rogers (Toledo, Ohio) set a U.S. women's U16 record for 3-point field goal percentage (.636, 7-11 3pt FGs).

Samantha Brunelle, a 6-2 forward at William Monroe (Ruckersville, Virginia) set a U.S. record for free throw percentage (.933, 14-15 FTs).

And Azzi Fudd, at 14 the youngest member of the team, tied the record for steals with 3.4 per game.

The U.S. sealed its gold medal on Sunday with a 91-46 win over Canada. Fudd, who will be a freshman in high school in the fall, led the way with 18 points in the final, while Boston and Cooke each had 15. Paige Bueckers added 11 and Diamond Miller had 10. The performance earned Team USA a spot in the the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup.

The USA U16 women are 24-1 all-time record since the FIBA Americas U16 championship was started in 2009. The U.S. was coming off a bronze-medal finish in the 2015 competition.

"It feels awesome," coach Carla Berube said. "We are excited to be bringing gold back to the USA."
