Why Florida State fired Mike Norvell (0:53)

The college football coaching carousel for the 2026 season got off to a slower start than last year's whirlwind, but that doesn't mean it can't pick up steam at any time.

In fact, the biggest slot to date opened Sunday when Florida State fired Mike Norvell, which was the fourth power-conference dismissal this year.

We'll track every FBS vacancy this carousel season, with updates as more jobs open and vacancies are filled.

Florida State

Out: Mike Norvell (41-39, seven seasons) | Fired Nov. 1

The high point for Norvell at FSU came in 2023, when the Seminoles won the ACC with a 13-0 record. But with star quarterback Jordan Travis injured, the College Football Playoff selection committee left the Seminoles out of the four-team playoff that season, a blow from which the program has been unable to recover. Florida State is 10-23 since -- including 3-5 this season.

Baylor

Out: Dave Aranda (40-40, seven seasons) | Fired Oct. 25

After posting a 2-7 record in his debut season in 2020, Aranda led the Bears to a 12-2 record, a Big 12 championship and a win in the Sugar Bowl in 2021. It would prove to be the high-water mark for his tenure. The Bears would have only one more winning season under him and were 4-3 following a 25-24 loss to Kansas when Aranda was dismissed.

Thamel: Philip Rivers is a real candidate to be next NC State head coach

NC State

Out: Dave Doeren (95-70, 14 seasons) | Fired Oct. 24

Doeren was the fourth-longest-tenured coach in the FBS, taking over the Wolfpack in 2013 and going on to become the school's winningest coach. But for all Doeren's success, NC State was never able to progress from a consistently good program to one that had a chance to win at the highest level. Doeren never won more than nine games in a season, and with the Wolfpack expecting to contend for the ACC championship this year, they got off to a 3-4 start and Doeren was fired after a 31-28 loss at Stanford.

Maryland

Out: Mike Locksley (39-54, eight seasons) | Fired Oct. 21

Locksley's exit arrived amid an 0-4 start to Big Ten play and a five-game losing streak. His final game was a 37-30 defeat to Rutgers, which marked the 20th loss in the program's past 22 Big Ten games. Locksley was under scrutiny for more than a year, as Maryland was coming off consecutive 4-8 seasons.

Sam Houston

Out: Phil Longo (3-17, two seasons) | Fired Oct. 28

Longo went 3-17 with the Bearkats, with a 1-11 record in Conference USA play and nine consecutive losses to FBS opponents. Sam Houston went 2-10 in Longo's debut season, with wins over Oregon State and Delaware, before dropping seven of eight this year, with the lone win against Nicholls of the FCS.
