Vols undecided at quarterback ahead of road game at Arkansas

Tennessee is undecided on who will start at quarterback on the road at Arkansas on Saturday.

Freshman Faizon Brandon has started every game this season but was replaced after throwing an interception in Saturday's 24-14 win vs. Auburn. Sophomore George MacIntyre came off the bench, completed eight of 10 passes with no turnovers and led the Vols to a victory.

"We'll find out as the week goes here," Tennessee coach Josh Heupel told reporters on Monday. "George came in and did some good things. Faizon, obviously, wasn't at his best dealing with getting injured in the Texas game. [That] was affecting his game.

"We'll go through the week here and you'll find out Saturday."

Brandon appeared to injure his shoulder during a close loss to No. 1 Texas two weeks ago, but he returned to the game and did not appear on the SEC availability report during the week leading up to the game vs. Auburn.

Heupel alluded to Brandon being limited during the week before the game and the missed opportunities of not taking as many reps.

"I thought he did a really good job of staying engaged and getting mental reps. We were making him take drops during the early part of the week, right behind the pocket," he said. "Ultimately just everybody together, we weren't playing our best football early. But he's a competitor. He's extremely tough. He's a winner. And he'll continue to bounce back from what he was dealing with."

Heupel said that Brandon "handled it well" when he was benched for MacIntyre.

"He was a good teammate during the course of the football game," he added. "Disappointed in that moment but also, I think he realized he wasn't playing at his best in major part because of what he was dealing with physically from the week before.

"Those guys have been great together in the room. I'm not saying they're best of friends hanging out outside of the building, but they've been really good inside of the room and on the practice field and on game day together. So anticipate that continuing here as we go."

Arkansas, which has struggled to find its footing under first-year coach Ryan Silverfield, is coming off a 34-7 loss to Texas A&M.

Tennessee, at 4-1 and a double-digit favorite to beat the Razorbacks, is set to host No. 6 Alabama in two weeks.
