Notre Dame wide receiver Quincy Porter will undergo season-ending surgery for a knee issue, coach Marcus Freeman announced Monday.
Porter, the No. 60 player in ESPN's transfer rankings, has not appeared in a game this season while working his way back from a left knee injury suffered at Ohio State last year. Freeman said that Porter had a recent setback in his recovery and that doctors determined an additional procedure was necessary.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound receiver had surgery to repair the patellar tendon in January. He had another procedure about a month ago, Freeman said, which the staff hoped would be the final step in getting him close to being ready to play. But an MRI over the weekend after a recent "flare-up" led doctors to conclude that he needed another surgery.
"Tough news for him," Freeman said. "He's a great young man that has really done everything right. He's got another setback, but his mind is in the right place. He'll be back at some point here before we know it."
Porter, a former top-100 recruit from New Jersey, caught four passes for 59 yards in his freshman season at Ohio State and will have three more years of eligibility.
Micah Gilbert has emerged as the leading receiver for the No. 3 Fighting Irish with 334 yards and two touchdowns on 15 receptions, and Jordan Faison has a team-high 17 catches for 239 yards and two scores.
Notre Dame faces another road test at North Carolina on Saturday (noon ET, ESPN) following its 49-10 win at Purdue to improve to 4-0.
