Four-star quarterback Christopher Vargas, the top-ranked pocket passer in the 2028 cycle, committed to Ohio State on Saturday.
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound prospect from Lawrence, Massachusetts, is ESPN's No. 14 overall recruit in the 2028 class. A two-year starter at Saint John's Prep in Danvers, Massachusetts, Vargas completed 66.7% of his passes for 2,038 yards and 24 touchdowns to three interceptions in his sophomore season last fall. He announced his Ohio State pledge via social media Saturday afternoon amid significant interest from Auburn, Boston College, Miami, Oregon, Texas A&M, USC, Virginia Tech and Washington, among others.
With Vargas in the fold, coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes now hold pledges from four of ESPN's top 100 prospects in the 2028 cycle, more than any other FBS program. Vargas arrives as the second-ranked member of the program's 2028 class, trailing only four-star wide receiver Jett Harrison (No. 6 overall), the son of Super Bowl XLI champion Marvin Harrison and the younger brother of ex-Ohio State All-American Marvin Harrison Jr., who committed to the Buckeyes on July 1.
In-state defensive tackle Jameer Whyce (No. 16 overall), pledged to Ohio State since last October, and four-star running back Elijah Newman-Hall (No. 90) round out Day's collection of 2028 pledges. The Buckeyes' 2027 class, headlined by commitments from four of the nation's top 15 prospects, currently sits at No. 7 in ESPN's latest class rankings for the cycle.
Vargas, who cannot sign until December 2027, marks the latest addition to Ohio State's future quarterback pipeline.
The Buckeyes enter the 2026 season with former five-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair and three-star freshman Luke Fahey within the program's quarterback depth behind returning starter Julian Sayin. In the 2027 cycle, Ohio State holds a pledge from four-star prospect Brady Edmunds (No. 173 overall), a 6-foot-6 pocket passer from Huntington Beach, California, and the longest-tenured quarterback commit in the 2027 class.
Vargas is one of six SC Next ESPN Junior 300 quarterbacks to come off the board since June 1, following in the wake of summertime commitments from James Armstrong (Penn State), Neimann Lawrence (Texas), Kingston Preyear (Alabama), Lukas Prock (Indiana) and Trey Tagliaferri (Oklahoma). Five-star dual-threat passer Jayden Wade, ESPN's No. 1 overall quarterback and fourth-ranked overall recruit in the 2028 cycle, has been committed to Georgia since last November.
