Presbyterian College Blue Hose @ South Alabama Jaguars
Johnson, ground attack lead South Alabama past Presbyterian
MOBILE, Ala. -- Xavier Johnson had 116 yards rushing, including a 70-yard TD run to open the scoring, and South Alabama beat Presbyterian 31-7 on Saturday night.
The Jaguars (5-5) rushed for 251 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries.
On the opening possession, Presbyterian (2-9) put together a 14-play, 62-yard drive but came away empty-handed when a 30-yard field-goal attempt missed wide left. Three plays later, Johnson's long run gave South Alabama the lead for good. Tyreis Thomas and Dami Ayoola added short rushing TDs to make it 21-0 at halftime.
Ryan Brown forced a fumble that Rock Ya-Sin returned 61 yards for a score to make it 21-7 with 8:29 left in the third, but the Jaguars added a 30-yard field goal by Gavin Patterson and Jalen Thompson's 30-yard interception return for a score in the fourth.
Originally, South Alabama was scheduled to play at Florida and Presbyterian at LSU, but buyouts by the Gators and Tigers, in order to reschedule their Oct. 8 game that was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew, put this game on the schedule.
