Marvin, defense lift Wofford to 16-0 win over Gardner-Webb
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- David Marvin kicked field goals of 45, 50 and 39 yards despite a constant rain, and Wofford's defense pitched its first shutout since 2012 in a 16-0 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
Both teams were anemic offensively, combining to punt 17 times and convert on 5 of 25 third-down attempts.
Ray Smith scored the game's lone touchdown, capping off a 16-play, 96-yard drive with a 7-yard end zone plunge to give Wofford (2-2) a 13-0 lead before halftime. Smith had 47 yards on 12 carries, Lorenzo Long had 63 yards on 20 totes and Evan Jacks was 3 of 8 for 41 yards.
Gardner-Webb (1-3) struggled to get its passing game going, as Tyrell Maxwell threw for just 58 yards on 11-of-27 passing. Josh Bettistea and Maxwell both ran for 45 yards.
