SEC roundtable: Which player do you want with the game on the line?

Earlier today, we looked back at the top five clutch performances in the SEC this past fall. What about this upcoming season? When the game is on the line and you need a play, which SEC player are you taking?

Edward Aschoff: Give me Chad Kelly any day of the week. Did you see the Alabama game? Did you see the craziness that ensued on this and this? Call it luck or call a blessing the refs didn’t see Kelly’s linemen downfield; I really don’t care. All I know is that Kelly is a winner and sometimes even winners need luck. Kelly completed 72.3 percent of his passes for 844 yards and six touchdowns when the Rebels were tied last season. When Ole Miss was down by seven points or fewer, Kelly completed 71.1 percent of his passes for 359 yards and two touchdowns. When down by 8-14 points, Kelly completed 75 percent of his passes. The guy has the clutch gene and he helped the Rebels win 10 games, including that thriller at Alabama.

Sam Khan: Offensive players are easy choices. Give me a pass-rusher who puts fear into opposing quarterbacks -- Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett. Even on days when he might be stymied or frustrated, he never quits playing and it showed a couple of times last season. In the fourth quarter of the Aggies' win over Arkansas, he stripped Brandon Allen, killing the Hogs' potential game-winning drive in the final minutes. In the fourth quarter against Nevada, when the Wolf Pack pulled to within striking distance of the Aggies in the fourth quarter and had the ball, he registered back-to-back sacks to get the ball back to the offense. He's a freakish athlete whose effort is always there.

Greg Ostendorf: Am I the only one taking Leonard Fournette because he’s the “easy” choice here? I know, I know. On the biggest stage last year, he ran for only 31 yards against a stout Alabama defense. But let’s not kid ourselves. He’s the best player in the conference. And as for clutch, he rushed for 308 yards and four touchdowns in the fourth quarter of games last year. If I need one player to have the ball to ice a game, it’s Fournette. Heck, if I’m trailing and I need a player to go down the field and get me a touchdown, it’s still Fournette. In a league with lackluster quarterback play, I’m taking the best overall player.

Alex Scarborough: If I have the game on the line and I have to have a touchdown, I'm calling Calvin Ridley's number. I don't care who the quarterback is. Ridley is that special a receiver. He's got speed and can go up and get the ball in traffic. He caught 89 balls for 1,045 yards -- as a freshman. And it's not as if he was picking on easy competition. His six games of 80 or more yards came against Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, Auburn, Florida and Michigan State. With more time to develop -- mentally and physically -- there's no telling how much better he'll be.
