CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs finalized their 25-man roster Sunday in advance of their opening game against the St. Louis Cardinals by selecting the contract of spring invitee Jonathan Herrera and designating outfielder Ryan Sweeney for assignment.
The moves mean outfielder Matt Szczur has also made the roster after opening eyes with five home runs this spring.
The Cubs also placed four players on the 15-day disabled list: pitchers Tsuyoshi Wada, Dallas Beeler and Jacob Turner along with outfielder Chris Denorfia. All four are retroactive to March 27.
The oft-injured Sweeney, 29, is owed $1.5 million this year as well as $500,000 for a buyout. Maddon said he liked the at-bats Sweeney was providing during the spring, but the Cubs chose Szczur over him as well as keeping an extra infielder in Herrera.
