The Buffalo Bills signed free-agent outside linebacker/defensive end Michael Buchanan after he made a visit to the team last week.
Buchanan, 24, was waived by the New England Patriots last month. A 2013 seventh-round selection, he played in 15 games as a rookie, tallying two sacks. His playing time dropped off last season, and he was active for just three games.
At 6-foot-6 and 255 pounds, Buchanan played defensive end in the Patriots' 4-3 scheme but could likely play either 'Sam' linebacker or defensive end in Rex Ryan's system. The Bills need depth at both of those spots, which could give Buchanan a shot at making the 53-man roster.
The Bills will return to the practice field on Wednesday for their fifth organized team activity.
To make room for Buchanan on the 90-man roster, the Bills waived punter Spencer Roth, an undrafted rookie.
