CEDAR PARK, Texas -- Caira Washington had 22 points and 12 rebounds and Jonquel Jones 20 points and 13 boards to lead No. 24 George Washington over Houston 82-78 on Thursday at the Lone Star Showcase.
Leading by two at halftime, the Colonials built a 61-45 lead after three quarters behind 12 points from Washington. The Colonials (4-1) led 61-45 after three quarters.
A 13-3 run to start the fourth quarter opened a 26-point lead, 74-48, with 5:15 left. With George Washington going to its bench, the Cougars (1-3) rallied, cutting the lead to five with 14 seconds left but Aaliyah Brown hit a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining before Houston's Jessieka Palmer made a half-court shot at the buzzer.
Alexis Chandler scored 10 points for George Washington, which outrebounded Houston 51-28.
Palmer, who made 6 of 7 3-pointers, scored a career-high 25 points and Alecia Smith added 17 for Houston.
