Stephanie Mavunga's last-second putback lifts UNC over Virginia
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Stephanie Mavunga scored 23 points, including game-winning putback with one second left to give No. 15 North Carolina a 72-70 win over Virginia on Thursday night.
Sarah Imovbioh's basket with 2:24 left started Virginia on a 9-0 run, with Mikayla Venson's jumper tying the game with 21 seconds left.
Allisha Gray, who put the Tar Heels up 70-61 with 4:19 left, missed a jumper with less than two seconds to go but Mavunga beat the buzzer with her putback.
N'Dea Bryant added 13 points for the Tar Heels (23-6, 10-5 ACC) -- who missed six field goals, three free throws and had a turnover between Gray's basket and Mavunga's game-winner -- and Brittany Rountree scored 10.
Faith Randolph had 24 points for Virginia (16-12, 6-9), which shot 50.9 percent but had 21 turnovers. Aliyah Huland El had 12 points, Imovbioh had 11 points and 12 rebounds, Lauren Moses had 11 points and nine rebounds.
