Ohio State takes down No. 21 West Virginia 96-54
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Kelsey Mitchell scored an Ohio State freshman record 39 points in 27 minutes as Ohio State took down No. 21 West Virginia 96-54 on Monday to snap the Mountaineers' seven-game winning streak.
Mitchell made 12 of 18 shots, including 8 of 10 from beyond the arc, and hit 7 of 11 free throws to move into a third-place tie on Ohio State's all-time single-game scoring list.
Ameryst Alston had 26 points for Ohio State (8-4). Alexa Hart added 11 points and five blocks.
West Virginia went on an 8-0 run to get within 47-39 -- its first single-digit deficit since it was 27-18. But Ohio State answered with a 7-0 run and, later, a 17-0 run pushed its lead to 84-50.
Bria Holmes led West Virginia (9-2) with 17 points.
Mitchell's 3-pointer at the 5:10 mark of the first half gave Ohio State a 43-21 lead, but the Buckeyes were outscored 8-0 the rest of the way for a 43-29 halftime lead.
