Alex Eala knows how to make a match interesting, but she also knows when to take control.
After surviving a tense opening-set tiebreak, the Filipina shifted into another gear to dismantle Croatia's Antonia Ruzic, 7-6(7), 7-5, and advance to the Hong Kong Open semifinals on Friday evening at Victoria Park Centre Court.
Eala and Ruzic traded holds of serve through the opening five games, with the Filipina asserting early control by winning the first, third, and fifth games to love. Ruzic, meanwhile, was equally efficient on her serve, dropping just one point across the second and fourth games as Eala carried a narrow 3-2 advantage.
The Croatian began applying pressure in the sixth game, with Eala falling behind 0-30 and facing the possibility of surrendering her serve. However, the 23-year-old responded with four consecutive points, using her aggressive baseline play to turn the game around and level the set at 3-3.
The seventh game proved to be the first major test for Eala's serve. Ruzic immediately earned three break points at 0-40, but the 21-year-old lefty dug deep to save all three and force deuce. Neither player was willing to give ground in an increasingly demanding exchange, with Ruzic eventually earning seven break-point opportunities in the game. The Croatian finally converted on her seventh chance, securing the first break of the match to move ahead 4-3.
The exchange of breaks continued through the closing stages of the set, with neither Eala nor Ruzic able to consolidate their advantage on serve. The two traded breaks across the next six games, producing a remarkable sequence that brought the opening set to 6-6 and forced a tiebreak.
Eala initially took control of the breaker, racing to a commanding 5-0 lead - the same advantage she built in the second set of her previous match against Tereza Valentova. However, much like that encounter, the second seed allowed her opponent back into contention as Ruzic won four consecutive points to cut the deficit to 5-4.
This time, though, Eala made sure the comeback stopped there. The Filipina held her nerve in the crucial exchanges, eventually closing out the tiebreak, 9-7, to claim a hard-fought opening set - just like how it ended in Eala's second set win last night.
Going into the second set, the first game was once again extended to six deuces before Ruzic was able to hold. But Eala quickly came back with a comfortable hold as well in the second game to tie it up at 1-1.
Overall, the set followed the same pattern, with Eala and Ruzic trading breaks across the following three games as the Filipina emerged with a 3-2 advantage. However, the world No. 17 finally managed to break the cycle in the sixth game, holding her serve to extend her lead to 4-2 and put herself in a stronger position to take control of the set.
Ruzic refused to go away quietly, battling through a demanding seventh game to hold serve before a rain delay briefly interrupted play in the eighth. The Croatian returned with renewed momentum, stringing together three consecutive games, capped by another hold in the ninth, to turn a 2-4 deficit into a 5-4 lead and put herself within reach of forcing a deciding set.
Eala, however, responded with a run of her own when it mattered most. The Filipina held serve in the 10th game before producing an impressive return game in the 11th to reclaim the lead. She then kept her composure with another crucial hold in the 12th, completing a three-game surge to close out the match and secure her place in the semifinals.
The biggest advantage for the Filipina in a close match was the winners count, where she had 40 compared to Ruzic's 33.
Up next for Eala in the semifinals will be fourth seed Maria Sakkari, who won her quarterfinal matchup against Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 6-2, 6-3.
