Alex Eala finally strung back-to-back wins in the Asian swing with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Australia's Talia Gibson in the round of 16 of the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Wednesday evening in Tokyo.
The Filipina tennis star now moves to a 50% record in the Asian swing at 3-3, following her win over Mika Stojsavljevic in the first round.
Both players settled into their service games early, with Gibson opening on a love hold before Eala conceded just one point to level the score.
The first signs of pressure came in the third game, when Eala earned a break point to threaten Gibson's serve. However, the Australian held firm behind strong serving to escape the early test and take a 2-1 lead.
The next four games went with serve, keeping Gibson in control at 4-3 before the Australian found her breakthrough in the eighth game. Sharp returning earned the 21-year-old the match's first break and a 5-3 cushion, putting her one game away from the opener.
Eala showed her grit by breaking back to love in the ninth game, but the world No. 19 could not sustain the momentum. A string of errors handed Gibson another break in the 10th game, allowing the Australian to take the first set, 6-4.
Even though Eala led the aces category 4-2, it was the points scored on returns that Gibson captured in the first set, 13-9.
After three consecutive breaks closed out the first set, the second began in a similar fashion, with Eala breaking Gibson for the second time in the match.
The Filipina finally stemmed the tide by holding serve in the next game, stringing together two games to take an early 2-0 lead.
The pair traded holds over the next two games, keeping Eala ahead at 3-1. She then had a chance to extend her advantage in the fifth game after earning a break point, but the 22-year-old Gibson held her nerve to fend off the opportunity, hold serve and pull within 3-2.
Yet, it was clear that Eala already had the momentum in the set, as she held in the sixth game and got a decisive break in the seventh game with an extreme return performance to make it 5-2.
And despite a testy eighth game, the 21-year-old lefty ultimately completed a three-game run to send it to an extender.
Going into the third set, there was no turning back for Eala, as she displayed excellent tennis to start with a first and third game break, including a hold in the third game to have a 3-0 lead.
The Eala rampage persisted with her great forehand to complete the third set bagel, and finished the match by taking the last nine games to advance to the final eight.
The quarterfinals will now present Eala with a chance to settle the score against Diana Shnaider, as the Russian edged the Filipina in their round of 16 meeting at the Ningbo Open last week 7-5, 6-4.
