Jesús de Miguel death: Tenerife player honoured by rival club Las Palmas

UD Las Palmas will wear blue and white colours instead of their regular yellow and blue in their LaLiga 2 game this weekend to honour Jesús de Miguel, the player of rivals Tenerife that died on Tuesday.

The Tenerife forward passed away in hospital aged 30, a day after an on-field collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a match in Spain's second division.

Las Palmas announced they will wear their third kit, a white and blue jersey, for Sunday's second division home game against CD Eldense.

When their third kit was unveiled, it received a cold reception by Las Palmas fans because white and blue are the colours of Tenerife. Both Tenerife and Las Palmas compete in Spain's second division and are in the Canary Islands.

"The match, which will take place at 5.30 p.m. at the Estadio Gran Canaria, will be an opportunity to pay tribute to Jesús by wearing a kit whose white and blue colours represent the blue-and-white team," the club said in a statement.

"UD Las Palmas hopes that this gesture will also serve as a sign of unity amongst the entire Canarian football community in the face of a loss that transcends any sporting rivalry. Rest in peace, Jesús."

On Saturday, Tenerife will hold a service to honour the memory of De Miguel at their Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium.

Many clubs have rallied behind Tenerife and De Miguel's family. UD Almería, the Spanish second division club which Cristiano Ronaldo has a 25% stake in, announced it will give all the proceeds from ticket sales of their next game against Tenerife to De Miguel's family.

Almería will host Tenerife in the league on Jan. 10, 2027.

A club statement said: "We are fully aware that nothing can ever make up for the loss of a loved one, and that no amount of support, whether financial or emotional, can ease the pain caused by such a tragedy. Nevertheless, we firmly believe that football extends far beyond the boundaries of the pitch, and that compassion, solidarity and mutual support in difficult times are among the most important values that unite the football family."

Tributes have also poured in for De Miguel. Como midfielder Nico Paz dedicated Wednesday's goal against Lens to the late Tenerife player. Paz, who was born in Tenerife but represents Argentina in international football, did not celebrate after scoring his team's third against Lens but instead held up a T-shirt that had an image of De Miguel during his team's Champions League record 9-1 win at Lens.

"I wanted to make that gesture to support the player's family and friends at this very difficult time," Paz, 22, said after the game.

"No one expected it. I'm a Tenerife fan. I watched the [Andorra] game and I saw it [the collision between De Miguel and Owono]. It was very tough. I spent the whole of yesterday feeling unwell. I want to send strength to the family."
