The draw on Wednesday night arguably placed added importance on Thursday's clash, as both sides knew that a win would put only Fleetwood -- giant-killers, maybe, but still a side struggling at the bottom of League Two -- between them and a two-legged semifinal.
For Everton, it offers the club a serious chance of winning its first trophy since 1995, when Paul Rideout scored the only goal of the game to beat Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final.
Both sides entered Thursday's game having enjoyed mixed starts to the new season. Everton began their campaign by going unbeaten in eight but had failed to win any of their last three games, losing the last two to Chelsea and Arsenal, respectively.
Newcastle, meanwhile, began the season by going within seconds of beating Liverpool, then claiming a valuable 2-0 win at Spurs. But recent defeats to Coventry and Aston Villa have Matthias Jaissle under pressure, with the valve only loosened slightly by Sunday's win at Crystal Palace.
